Gearbox components exchange (Spain)

As part of a long-standing cooperation with a Spanish customer, MTU Power carried out a gearbox components exchange. The scope of the project included exchanging bearings and the wheel set, as well as aligning the GT with the gearbox and generator.

Requirements and challenges

  • Bearing damage
  • Scratches detected by MTU in the “tooth flank” during the half-yearly  inspection of the package
  • Scheduled 100,000 hours GT maintenance

Solution and scope of supply

  • Exchange damaged bearings
  • Lifting new wheel set in gearbox (pinion shaft and gear wheel shaft)
  • Determine axial bearing clearance
  • Alignment: GT – Gearbox – Generator
  • Job executed during scheduled 100,000 hours GT maintenance, in turn saving costs

  • Operation within OEM specifications
  • Reduced bearing and seal wear
  • Coupling shaft diaphragm fatigue and damage avoided
